Capital Market Institutions and Venture Capital: Do They Affect Unemployment and Labour Demand?

This paper analyses the influence of the capital market on the labour market. Especially the impact of start-up financing on the structure of unemployment is of interest. We use a cross-country panel data analysis to examine how venture capital investment influences disaggre-gate unemployment. As we expected, venture capital investment has different influences on sectoral-, educational- and occupational-specific unemployment. We suggest, on the basis of the regression results that venture capital investment is a catalyst of structural change and has contributed to the faster growing internet and new economy sector in countries like the U.S. that have a well-developed venture capital market.Labor markets, venture capital, employment, new economy, panel analysis

Erich Fromm and the Critical Theory of Communication

Erich Fromm (1900-1980) was a Marxist psychoanalyst, philosopher and socialist humanist. This paper asks: How can Fromm’s critical theory of communication be used and updated to provide a critical perspective in the age of digital and communicative capitalism? In order to provide an answer, the article discusses elements from Fromm’s work that allow us to better understand the human communication process. The focus is on communication (section 2), ideology (section 3), and technology (section 4). Fromm’s approach can inform a critical theory of communication in multiple respects: His notion of the social character allows to underpin such a theory with foundations from critical psychology. Fromm’s distinction between the authoritarian and the humanistic character can be used for discerning among authoritarian and humanistic communication. Fromm’s work can also inform ideology critique: The ideology of having shapes life, thought, language and social action in capitalism. In capitalism, technology (including computing) is fetishized and the logic of quantification shapes social relations. Fromm’s quest for humanist technology and participatory computing can inform contemporary debates about digital capitalism and its alternatives

Empirical insights into the benefit from implementing smart contracts

Smart contracts are highly relevant due to their support for new decentralized business models and processes. We empirically investigate the benefit of implementing smart contracts. Our approach measures the benefit by capturing the impact of implementing smart contracts on processes directly. Thus, our research supersedes previous research that uses deductive approaches for deriving beneficial effects from technical and architectural properties of smart contracts and blockchains. We conduct a systematic approach using the aspects cost, quality, time and flexibility, and their impact on the four process phases interest, agreement, fulfillment, and assessment. Our research enables decision-makers to make decisions on implementing smart contracts more precisely. Furthermore, decision-makers become able to develop more target-oriented initiatives

Geoarchaeological studies on Roman time harbour sediments in Cologne — comparison of different OSL dating techniques

Due to the construction of a new North-South subway in Cologne, Roman time harbour sediments were exposed and were sampled for luminescence dating. A very good independent age control was given by the precise knowledge of the chronology of Roman activity and by radiocarbon ages of charcoal samples. Hence, different methodological approaches within luminescence dating were applied for Holocene heterogeneously bleached fluvial samples and were compared to the known ages. For one sample, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied to coarse-grained quartz using a single aliquot regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol. After De-measurements, dif-ferent statistical approaches were tested (i.e. arithmetic mean, median, minimum age model, finite mixture model, leading edge method and the Fuchs and Lang approach). It is demonstrated that the Fuchs and Lang approach along with the leading edge method yielded the best matching OSL ages with respect to the known ages. For the other sample which showed feldspar contamination within the quartz signal, the post-IR blue stimulated luminescence (double SAR protocol) was measured in three different ways to calculate the De-value: with continuous wave (CW) stimulation with an IR-bleach at 50°C and at 225°C for 100 s prior to the OSL, and pulsed OSL (POSL). It was demonstrated that the IR-stimulation at 225°C has very good potential to remove the feldspar signal contribution as well as pulsed OSL, but the former might deplete parts of the quartz OSL signal. © 2011 Silesian University of Technology, Gliwice, Poland. Interaktive E-Learning-Module in der Humangenetik : Einsatz und Evaluation im Rahmen der Medizinstudierenden- und Humanbiologen-Ausbildung

Einleitung: Die vorliegende Studie beschreibt unser Online-Lehrmaterial Humangenetik im Zusammenhang mit dem k-MED-Projekt (Knowledge in Medical Education) an der Philipps-Universität Marburg. Es besteht aus fünf E-Learning-Modulen: Zytogenetik, Chromosomenstörungen, Formalgenetik, Grundlagen der molekularen Diagnostik sowie Kongenitale Abnormitäten und Fehlbildungssyndrome. Diese E-Module sollen ein einheitliches Wissensniveau der Studierenden gewährleisten und die Dozenten in der Präsenzlehre entlasten. Methoden: Die fünf E-Learning-Module Humangenetik wurden auf freiwilliger Basis einer großen Personengruppe von ca. 3300 Studierenden am Fachbereich Humanmedizin der Universität Marburg über eine Dauer von vier Jahren angeboten. Die Teilnehmer bestanden aus Naturwissenschaftlern (Humanbiologie) im 5. Fachsemester und Studierenden der Humanmedizin, die sich entweder in der Vorklinik (1. Semester) oder im klinischen Studienabschnitt (7./8. Semester) befanden. Von diesen wurden Daten zur Akzeptanz in Form von Usertrackingdaten und klausur-begleitenden Fragebögen erhoben. Ergebnisse und Schlussfolgerung: Die Evaluation zeigte eine breite Akzeptanz unserer Lehrmodule über einen Zeitraum von acht Semestern. Obwohl das Angebot freiwillig ist, werden die Online-Kurse Humangenetik konstant oder sogar in zunehmendem Maße zwischen Wintersemester 2005/06 und Sommersemester 2009 genutzt. Fazit: Unser E-Learning-Modell Humangenetik wird von Studierenden aus unterschiedlichen Semestern und Studiengängen am Fachbereich Humanmedizin gut angenommen und genutzt. Bei sorgfältiger Pflege der Online-Kurse steigern moderate Anpassungen sowohl Akzeptanz als auch Benutzungshäufigkeit in signifikanter Weise. Die Anwendung der E-Learning Module erscheint uns auch in der Ausbildung von MTAs oder Pflegekräften sinnvoll, um ein ausreichendes Grundwissen in Humangenetik zu gewährleisten. La Kurzarbeit alemana como modelo para la reducción temporal de jornada en España

El modelo alemán de la jornada reducida, de probada eficacia, ya se considera “mejor práctica” en la política europea de mercado laboral. Sin embargo, ¿son trasladables a otros países las experiencias alemanas? Para el año 2010 España ha reformado su normativa relativa a la suspensión total o parcial de la relación laboral y se ha orientado en el “modelo alemán” de la jornada reducida. El Gobierno y los agentes sociales están debatiendo una mayor aproximación al ejemplo alemán. De esta manera posiblemente crezca la aceptación, hasta ahora bastante escasa, de la jornada reducida, aunque incluso antes de la reforma del mercado de trabajo de junio de 2010 ya existían en España posibilidades para proceder a ello.. Welche datenbasierten Servicemodelle sind erfolgsversprechend für KMU der Maschinen‑, Anlagen‑, Elektro- und Metallindustrie?

Erworben im Rahmen der Schweizer Nationallizenzen (http://www.nationallizenzen.ch)Durch die Möglichkeiten des Internet of Things (IoT) sind industrielle Produkte heute in der Lage, Anbieter und Kunden miteinander zu vernetzen. Produktbasierte Daten entstehen in allen Phasen des Produktlebenszyklus. Sie eröffnen den Anbietern die Möglichkeit, neue datenbasierte Servicemodelle zu entwickeln, um neuen Kundennutzen zu schaffen, der letztendlich durch neue digitale Geschäftsmodelle monetarisiert werden kann. Doch welche Ansätze bringen wirklichen Mehrwert für den Anbieter und sind damit den Implementierungsaufwand wert? Die vorliegende Studie untersucht, welche Servicemodelle für kleine und mittlere Unternehmen (KMU) der Maschinen-, Anlagen-, Elektro- und Metallindustrie erfolgversprechend sind. Es konnten zehn Servicemodelle identifiziert werden, die für die Unternehmen einen grundsätzlich hohen Mehrwert, jedoch teilweise unterschiedliche Implementierungsaufwände aufweisen. Die Vergütungsmodelle, mit denen die Servicemodelle bevorzugt monetarisiert werden können, erwiesen sich als vom Servicemodell selbst sowie von der Branche abhängig. In Summe wurde die Realisierungswahrscheinlichkeit für die datenbasierten Servicemodelle und die damit verbundenen digitalen Geschäftsmodelle innerhalb der nächsten drei Jahre noch als moderat eingeschätzt
